Headspace is a journaling app that provides a space to release suppressed feelings, friendly to first-time journalers who may not where to start.
1. Literature Review
Problem
Individuals struggle to seek support or take steps to address their mental health issues because they don’t know how to, don't recognize they may need help, or fear the social stigma.
Furthermore, they lack a constructive outlet to log or process their thoughts in an organized manner.
Research Process
Solution
Design a journaling app that follows an evidence-based method and is easy for
first-time users to use, while addressing the frustrating aspects of similar apps.
2. User Research
Interview
The target audience was older teens and adults who struggle with mental health issue.
The team was able to interview five diverse individuals who fit the description.
To better understand their needs, the interviewees were questioned about :

Experience about mental health disorders including coping mechanism

Previous efforts to alleviate mental health struggles

Motivation and consistency to their current mental health assistance tool

Opinions about currently existing mental health applications

Feelings towards digital and traditional journaling

Time is the main obstacle for many users. Users need a quick and easy way to journal.
Simplicity
Users feel cognitive overload with screens compact with information
and features.
Review
Recognition is the first step to taking actions. Users want to instantly identify and understand mood patterns.
Inspiration
Users want to write but feel stressed when starting an entry or struggling with what to say.
Personalization
Users want to form attachment to their journaling space and need a comforting, secure environment.
Professional Participation
Users found journaling helpful especially in combination with therapy.
The findings assessed the pain points and identified design requirements, which lead to our personas.

Based on the information we collected, we came up with design requirements then came up with solutions for each pain points.
